Ski Holidays in Italy
Ski Holidays to Italy

Italy's ski resorts span some of the world's great domains, with the Dolomiti SuperSki region and the Milky Way offering hundreds of kilometres of lift-linked slopes. Italian ski holidays are generally a very relaxed affair, with an equal importance being leant to sunbathing and eating as it is to the actual skiing, meaning that restaurants on and off the snow are decent and inexpensive.
Choosing a resort
Most Italian resorts are more suited to beginners and intermediates, although there is some more challenging terrain around for those that search for it. Having said that, if you chose the right resort, a ski holiday in Italy can offer amazing skiing and scenery for a lot less than you'd pay at the big name European resorts.

Cervinia, based on the Italian side of the Matterhorn, is a prime example. With 200km of its own runs , Cervinia is an absolute haven for intermediates. However, more advanced skiers only need to take the lift over to Zermatt to be able to explore the beauties of the Swiss side of the Matterhorn, without paying the premium price for accommodation.

Courmayeur on the Italian side of Mont Blanc is another example, just over the mountain from Chamonix, Courmayeur possesses some of the traditional Alpine history of its French neighbour, but at considerably lower prices. More importantly, at just a short trip through the Mont Blanc tunnel from Chamonix, all the extreme skiing you could wish for is only a car ride away.

Italy does also have some world class skiing within its own borders, most famously in the Dolomiti SuperSki area. This is one of the biggest ski areas in the world, where 1 lift pass gives you access to 12 large ski resorts and more than 1,200 kilometres of slopes. It's a great place for families and claims to have sunshine on 8 out of 10 days.

Choosing accommodation
Italy has some great value ski accommodation, with a good mixture of hotels, chalets and some apartments, ranging from exclusive Luxury hotels to more basic standard accommodation. Hotels are often a popular option in Italy, many of which have their own restaurants offering top notch cuisine. There are also plenty of catered chalet options, which can often work out cheaper as food and some wine is usually included in the price.
