Ruka - Finland

Located in Northern Finland on the Arctic Circle, this untamed environment is the ideal backdrop for great challenges - and even greater achievements. Ruka in Kuusamo is one of Finland's best-known winter sport locations and was recently awarded Finland's best ski resort. Ruka's skiing season is one of the longest in the world and continues from October until the beginning of May with the lifts open for over 200 days per season.

This unspoiled little gem, also known as 'The Gateway to Lapland' is a far cry from the overcrowded resorts of the Alps, characterised by the great contrast between seasons and an abundance of snow. Those yearning for a touch of magic should experience the snow sculptured woodland and frozen twinkling lakes, as well as the chance to witness the magical Northern lights shimmering in the moonlight between September and February!

The slopes of Ruka are powdered across four breathtaking arctic fells which provide sheltered skiing in the scenic wonderland unique to Finland. Ruka has advanced facilities and is a dream for cross-country skiers with 200Km (15km floodlit) trails, an extensive, highly varied trail network. Ruka Ski Resort is the official sponsor and training centre of the successful Finnish Freestyle team. Ruka Ski Resort has been chosen to host the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships on 17-20 March. The FIS World Cup Nordic Opening competition will be held 26-28 November 2004. Ruka also hosts several FIS slalom races and snowboarding competitions every season.

For the boarders amongst us Ruka has 2 half pipes and two snowboard streets hosting tabletops, rails and corners to perfect your slides and jumps, not to mention the international level Vuosseli SuperPipe and the re-shaped BoarderCross course. The internationally renowned Freestyle Centre is available for use by many national teams and casual skiers alike - The course length of Battery Run is 225 meters and altitude difference is 106 meters: steepness is altogether 53%/ 29°C

Restaurants are a big part of the holiday at Ruka and Kuusamo! Restaurant selection in the area is wide and versatile: you can taste the top-class delicacies of a five-star hotel or enjoy a traditional fried whitefish portion in a cosy log restaurant. If you prefer a quick bite in the middle of action, you can choose your favourite from several cafés. Many of the restaurants use the pure and tasty products of local nature, especially game, fish, berries and mushrooms. Restaurant Kaltiokivi is an easy place to walk in for a tasty lunch or Lappish style dinner. We cater for everyone and also offer the popular meals like french fries and meatballs, as well as the option of choosing between smaller and bigger portions.

Lively nightlife offers many choices both to those who love the tunes of old dance music and those who are looking for the latest club music. And as benefits having honest fun, the party continues early into the morning. Many restaurants have an entrance fee for live band nights. Restaurant Piste is the place to go for both apres-ski and late night parties! On a sunny day the party quite often starts already on the scenic terrace. Live bands and the popular DJs choose the right tunes for each night! SkiBistro is where many people consider to be the best place in Finland for traditional after-Ski with ski boot dancing and funny contests.

Ruka-Kuusamo area offers many different lodging alternatives. You can stay in a hotel close to lively nightlife, in an inn surrounded by the northern wilderness or in a cosy log cottage. Standards of food and accommodation are high, while alcohol prices are well below what you might expect.
