If you haven't suffered from this year's flu misery, there are ways of minimising your chances of getting it at all.
Colds and flu are caused by viruses that are spread when we are in close proximity to one another. The immune system is constantly on the lookout for any such organisms that may pose a threat to the body.
However, if the immune system is weakened for any reason, our resistance will be lowered and we are therefore more likely to go down with a cold or flu. The secret to combating winter infections is to keep the immune system strong and healthy.
The efficiency of the immune system is very closely related to our diet. Make sure you and your husband eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables during the winter as this will help provide your immune systems with the nutrients needed for optimal function. Eat as little sugar as possible because it has been shown to suppress immune function.
As far as supplements go, I recommend a simple regime which includes one vitamin, one mineral, and a herb. Take 1g of vitamin C, twice a day for its immune-stimulating and anti-viral properties. Zinc is also important for immune function. Take 30-45 mg per day. Vitamin C and zinc should be taken throughout the cold season.
In addition, I recommend that you take the herb Echinacea for its various immune stimulating properties. Echinacea is generally available in tablet form and as a tincture. Follow the instructions on the label and take the supplement for 6-8 weeks. This and the other nutrients recommended here should give your immune system the boost it needs to keep infections at bay.
